History

Bryn Mawr is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pennsylvania, US. It is across three townships, Radnor Township, Haverford Township, and Lower Merion Township. It was part of the land charter that William Penn was granted by King Charles II, back in 1681. The town has its name from a Welsh estate owned by Quaker Rowland Ellis who escaped persecution in 1686.

Bryn Mawr lies at the center of what is referred to as the Main Line, a collection of affluent Philadelphia suburban villages extending from the city edges to Malvern. Rich families chose these villages for their sprawling country estates which makes it one of the oldest bastions of old money in America. It also has a hospital called Bryn Mawr Hospital built by Dr. George Gerhard in 1893 on Main Line.

The community made an influential mark on the women’s suffrage movement when, in 1885, philanthropist Joseph W. Taylor founded Bryn Mawr College. It was considered one of the first institutions in the nation to offer graduate degrees to women.

Today, Bryn Mawr remains a vibrant and prosperous place due to noteworthy architecture from Louis Kahn, such as Ellis Museum, the Bryn Mawr Hotel, and the Trust Company Building – along with an active economy and well-known heritage.
