Newtown Square’s early history dates back to 1684. It was around this time that many Welsh Settlers found the area and set up a Quaker group. By 1696, they had grown in popularity, building the Newtown Square Friends Meeting House during the early 1700s. For most of the 1800s, it maintained its Quaker roots as a mostly rural, farming community with several blacksmith shops.
It wasn’t until the start of the industrialist period in America that Newtown Square began to change. Many businesses produced handmade wares and gained popularity with customers located in nearby Philadelphia, leading to several inns and taverns being opened up in town.
As the 19th century continued, larger mills and factories began replacing small artisan vendors, yet two local hunt clubs – Rose Tree Hunt Club and Radnor Hunt Club – were able to continue sustaining its country feel.
At the turn of century, electrification made its way into Newtown Square with trolley lines from town reaching Fernwood by 1895 Together with automobiles arriving soon after this era saw large tracts being divided for big developments transforming once rural pastoral into vibrant suburban residential space.
